This island landmark is quite visible as you approach the island by boat. Its craggy surface rises 640 meters, with only one side having access to the top. It was the original site of the administrative capital during Venetian rule (1207-1715). Ongoing excavations at the base of the mountain on its southern side have revealed some incredible finds of the Geometric period and from the 5th and 6th centuries B.C. At the eastern side of the mountain, you can clearly see the remains of the old fortified walls. You can leave your car near the Church of the Sacred Heart and make your way up the rough-hewn stone steps to the top, a climb taking about 20 minutes. The view from the top on a clear day is impressive. You can see all the way to Santorini! |
