Day 3 - Monday, June 18, 2012
Today is completely free for you to enjoy Prague at your own pace.
With its castle, the bridges along the Vltava river and the romantic streets in the Old Town, Prague had always been an attractive destination for travellers. But after the Velvet Revolution of 1989 it became one of the most visited and talked about cities in Europe. Partly because it was cheaper than traditional, overrated destinations, but mostly because of its special charm from past centuries.
There is no gay epicenter in Prague. But as the Vinohrady district tends to become the hedonist's and stylish quarter of Prague you will find most of the gay bars and clubs there. Also, if you are tired of the uninspired and heavy Czech cuisine and the gastronomical tourist's traps in the Old Town of Prague, Vinohrady is the district to go for dining out.
Prague has become a gay metropolis of former Eastern Europe in the last few years. At present there are some 30 gay bars, cafés, pubs, sex clubs and saunas in the city. And new places are being opened all the time.
Czech society is one of the most secular and sexually liberal in Europe. The age of sexual consent is 15 for all, and there is no sodomy law. Although prostitution is legal, both parties must be over 18. In the case of sex with someone below this age, money or gifts must not be exchanged as a form of payment.
The Czech Republic became the second former communist country in Europe to grant legal recognition to same-sex partnerships. Overnight Yasmin Hotel, Prague, 4*. Meal: B
Day 4 - Tuesday, June 19, 2012
After breakfast we are off to Dresden, Saxony's capital where the city sits in baroque splendor and a wide sweep of the Elbe river. The city had the old reputation of being the "Florence of the River Elbe". Upon arrival we familiarize ourselves with a short orientation tour. Dresden offers a great variety of attractions including the Dresden Zwinger, the Frauenkirche Church, Semper Opera house and the Royal Palace. The rest of the afternoon and evening are free for you to explore Dresden on your own. Overnight Radisson Blu Gewandhaus Hotel, Dresden, 5*. Meal: B
Day 5 - Wednesday, June 20, 2012
Today is a free day for you to explore Dresden at your own pace. Your guide will have optional activities planned. Dresden's fame and attractiveness refers back mostly to the glamourous period as the royal residence of the Saxonian kings. Before the Allied bombing in February 1945, Dresden was considered as one of the most beautiful cities in Europe with its unmatched collection of baroque architecture and it had often been called the "Florence of the Elbe".
For centuries now, Dresden has been at the cross-roads of various cultures. This is where art and culture are at home. This is also where an atmosphere of tolerance could develop in which gays and lesbians could also feel at home. The reason why Dresden is not a gay centre could be because the Saxon's also have a reputation for being good-natured. The slogan of many gays and lesbians here seems to be not to provoke but rather to integrate. Thus gay life freely mingles with the rest of Dresden's night life.
During the daytime, lovers of beauty can already fully enjoy themselves - with the arts of course. Everywhere in town you can see statues representing images of beauty past and present: the fountains at Albert Square, statues of beautiful ladies on the Hauptstrasse, the four times of the day at the Brühlsche Terraces, young boys of the Muses in front of the Schauspielhaus theatre, the collection of sculptures at the Albertinum...
Overnight Radisson Blu Gewandhaus Hotel, Dresden, 5*. Meal: B
Day 6 - Thursday, June 21, 2012
After breakfast we depart for Berlin, the capital of Germany with and infamous history and home to some of the most talked about architecture. Upon arrival we enjoy a half day sightseeing tour of Berlin. We visit the Brandenburg Gate, a view of the Reichstag with its new glass dome, a view of the Victory Column with its golden statue of Victory. Overnight NH Hotel Berlin-Mitte, Berlin, 4*. Meal: B
Day 7 - Friday, June 22, 2012
Sure to be a highlight of your trip, we jump into some relicts from the past – Trabants! These trabis as they are commonly known were the primary car of the Eastern block and become our means of transportation as we travel through Berlin fulfilling specific tasks. Go back in time as you cross a "Police border station" on the boarder from East Germany to West Germany. We will divide up into smaller groups where you will have the opportunity to drive one of the trabis yourself. All of our cars will be connected with a walkie-talkie system as we help each other through the adventure. Return to our hotel where the rest of the afternoon is free for you to explore Berlin on your own. Overnight NH Hotel Berlin-Mitte, Berlin, 4*. Meal: B
Day 8 - Saturday, June 23, 2012
Please note: This is the tentative day for the Parade. The organizers have not officially announced this but from historic reference we are fairly confident it will be so.
Berlin has always been known for their openness and love of all. Today marks the Christopher street parade also known as the gay pride parade. Today is completely free for you to enjoy the parade and all the festivities that will be taking place today. For those who would prefer a more quieter day we will have a list of various options that you will enjoy.
Germany's gay-lesbian capital is Berlin! Which metropolis boasts such unique variety in bars, pubs, clubs and parties? Highlights to be marked in your calendar are naturally the celebration of gay pride – in Germany called CSD (Christopher Street Day) – and Pride Week with numerous events like the big street fair in the neighbourhood around Motzstraße in Schöneberg. In 2012 the Berlin CSD will take place for the 34th time. Its birth was a small demonstration with a few hundred participants in 1979. In the last few decades it grew to become a spectacular parade of hundreds of thousands.
Together with guests from home and abroad, the community shows self confidence, also concerning political issues which are the reason for this demonstration. Leading up to the parade are various events like the Swing dance Gay Night at the Zoo or the CSD on the Spree (Berlin river). Apart from mainstream CSD there is the transgeniale CSD held in Kreuzberg which is less commercial.
This evening Hermes Tours hosts a farewell dinner at a local restaurant where we get a last chance to say farewell to our new treasure hunt, trabi pro, travel companions. Afterwards we are sure to head to one of the local gay clubs to keep the celebrations going. Overnight NH Hotel Berlin-Mitte, Berlin, 4*. Meal: B, D
Day 9 - Sunday, June 24, 2012
Our tour officially ends after breakfast today. You are free to schedule your return flight for anytime today. Due to the fact that Berlin has 3 separate airports we have not arranged a group airport transfer but will assist you with choosing the best method to get to the airport. Meal: B
