Together we’ll soak away the daily-grind in steaming hot springs, stretch our hamstrings during guided bush treks and share stories and life-experiences over world-class dinners. If all goes well, we’ll walk away from this experience with a better understanding of South Africa and ourselves.

Please note: This tour is wellness-focused. Some travellers are from the sober community and while you’re welcome to enjoy a glass of wine during dinner, this is not a party vacation.

Day 2 - Tshipise
Rise and shine, Ladies!

Today’s journey begins with a 5-hour scenic drive north-east past Pretoria towards the most northern part of Kruger National Park, stopping for lunch en route.

Our resort is near the famous Tshipise fault lines, formed between the late Paleozoic era 545 million years ago and early Mesozoic era 248 million years ago. The region is named after its steaming natural hot springs—Tshipise literally means “something warm”.

After settling into our quaint accommodations, consider a revitalising dip in the gorgeous pools. In our opinion, this is the best way to wash off the daily grind and begin our journey together anew.

Alternatively, the resort is located underneath a small mountain called Tshipise koppie. If you’re feeling ambitious you can surmount the tower for a beautiful vantage of the baobab peppered landscape.

Dinner will be at our accommodation.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Accommodation: Forever Resort Tshipise, Kruger National Park

Days 3 - 5 - Makuleke Contractual Park
Our day begins with a 2-hour drive to Pafuri Gate. This entrance into Kruger National Park technically brings us into historic Makuleke Contractual Park where our very own private camp awaits.

For the next three days and nights we’ll see untamed, unfenced, untethered African bush. From sun-up to sun-down we will explore the region by foot and vehicle.

Our guided treks are through extremely remote stretches of African bush, hopefully granting us encounters with zebra, giraffe and impala. Meanwhile, game drives will take us deeper into the park where we can safely observe elephant, lion and leopard.

In the evenings we’ll kick back in our unique accommodation consisting of spacious two-person tents, cozy beds, chemical toilet en suite and separate hot water shower facilities.

The unfenced camp is next to the Luvhuvu River, which means ‘visitors’ come and go, especially at night once the campfire goes down.

With everyone safely in their tents, we’ll place a nocturnal camera to capture the passing wildlife: civets, genets, hyenas, leopards, porcupines and more.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Accommodation: Return Africa Pafuri Tented Camp, Makuleke Contractual Park

Day 6 - Shingwedzi
After three days exploring Kruger National Park’s northern territory we head south.

Our journey will be slow as we enjoy game drives along the route. If Lady Luck is on our side, we’ll photograph plenty of the region’s more aquatically-inclined fauna including hippo, waterbuck and an array of birdlife. Meanwhile on land, we’ll likely see parades of elephant and dazzles of zebra.

Tonight we enjoy another delicious dinner at Shingwedzi camp.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Accommodation: Shingwedzi Rest Camp,Shingwedzi

Day 7 - Hoedspruit Wildlife Estate
We’ll start our day with a drive through the park and end at The Hoedspruit Wildlife Estate, just an hour outside the park gates (roughly 4 hours, stop and go).

Our accommodation for the night is in a private residential wildlife estate home to impala, wildebeest, greater kudu, southern giraffe, warthog and other non-threatening plains game.

In fact, the absence of elephant, buffalo, lion and rhino means you can explore the estate’s greenbelt area on foot, by mountain bike or on horseback.

After some free time we’ll reconvene for dinner.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Accommodation: Unembeza Boutique Lodge & Spa, Hoedspruit Wildlife Estate

Days 8 - 10 - Timbavati Private Game Reserve
Pucker up! This morning you have the rare chance to smooch South Africa’s famous hippopotamus, Jessica. This fabulous lady has a darling story that we’ll share at the time. We promise you’ll be smitten.

After our brush with celebrity, we spend our remaining nights in the heart of the Timbavati Private Nature Reserve, part of the Greater Kruger National Park. The Greater Kruger National Park Area is a joint venture between the Kruger National Park and the Associated Private Nature Reserves, an area of more than 20,000,000 Ha (or more than 4,9421,076 acres—the size of Nebraska!).

Our home for the next 3 nights is the stunning Tanda Tula Safari Camp, a luxury tented camp. The camp is completely unfenced, merging luxury with the natural environment. You have plenty of options here to cap off your tour: join any/all of our two daily game drives, stretch your hamstrings on optional guided walks, or unwind by the glistening pool.

Each evening we’ll come together again for some of the best meals on tour.

Trip Notes

Visas
There is no visa requirement for American, Australian, British and Canadian travellers to South Africa for less than 90 days.

Culture Shock
When travelling to Southern Africa, you’ll see both good and bad, but locals tend to be very friendly and welcoming. However, poverty is widespread. Most people speak English, and the food at restaurants and hotels is generally safe to eat. That said, tourists can be easy targets for petty crime, so be extremely cautious with personal belongings in public, and avoid wearing expensive jewelry.

Local LGBT Scene
South Africa was actually the first country in the world to outlaw discrimination based on sexual orientation. It was also the fifth country in the world to legalize same-sex marriage. Unfortunately, a forward thinking political climate hasn’t translated to public acceptance as social stigma is still thick across the country, especially in rural areas. When asked “Should Society Accept Homosexuality?” over 61% of locals said ‘No’.

Weather
July falls within South Africa’s rainy season so please expect a few showers. In Kruger Park at this time of year, the average morning temperature is 10°C/50°F while afternoons will be pleasant with temperatures around 26°C/79°F and cloudless skies.

Required Vaccinations
Based on the entry requirements, there are no immunizations needed for entry. To determine if you should take preventative measures to reduce the risk of illness, consult with your doctor or a travel medical clinic. We cannot provide vaccination recommendations.

Electricity
You will need an international travel plug/adapter for type C/D/M/N sockets.

Connectivity
Most of our hotels will have Wi-Fi access, so feel free to tweet, pin, post and share your experience with your friends and family at home. They might be a tad jealous!

Malaria
Some of the areas we’ll travel to on this trip have a moderate risk for malaria. You should consult your physician at least two weeks prior to travel in order to consider the options available to you for prevention.

Yellow Fever
To prevent introduction of this disease into the country, South Africa requires a valid Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate from all citizens and non-citizens over one year of age travelling from an infected area, or who have been in transit through infected areas.

Travel Insurance
For everybody’s peace of mind, medical travel insurance is required on our tour. At a minimum, your travel insurance must provide cover against personal accident, death, medical expenses, emergency repatriation and personal liability, with a minimum medical coverage of US $200,000.

Your guide
Our adventure is led by a lesbian (or lesbian-welcoming) guide. Whenever possible, we hire destination locals. And we can also connect you with the right people if you’d like to delve deeper into the local culture. If you’re pleased with your guide, we recommend a tip of US $10-25 per person, per day…they’ll certainly appreciate it!

Fellow adventurers
Out Adventures are a great way to meet people from around the world and all walks of life. Bear in mind that everybody’s there for a good time, so mutual respect will go a long way. Please be on time for any meet ups, empathetic to the needs of others, and ready to roll with whatever the adventure brings.

Flying Solo
If you’ve never travelled on your own, it’s an amazing way to get to know yourself while making new friends along the way. We can arrange for you to share a room with people in your age range at no charge, or you can pay a supplement for your own room. If there’s an odd number of solos, we’ll rotate a single room on a random basis.

Optional activities
Every Out Adventure offers optional excursions that are not included in price of this trip. Please see the daily itinerary in your final pre-trip packet to learn what’s available.

Meals
Most meals are included in this tour.

Money
The local currency is the South African Rand, however USD is widely accepted for tourism purposes. We recommend carrying local currency or small USD bills for small purchases, although credit cards are accepted at most upscale restaurants and hotels. We also recommend carrying approximately $400 USD to be used in case of an emergency, or if your credit/ATM cards are placed on hold.

Tipping
We recommend budgeting approximately $30–$65 USD per person/day.

What to bring
Please keep your baggage under 20kg/44lb to avoid costly surcharges on domestic flights. You should also bring something smaller to carry a water bottle, your camera and souvenirs on day trips. This packing list is a guideline, not gospel, but we are happy to answer any specific questions about how much (or little) to bring.
