Baltic Luxury Cruise Itinerary(Begins in Copenhagen, Denmark and ends in Stockholm, Sweeden)
Copenhagen, Denmark - June 18, 2011
Departs at 6:00 PM
Copenhagen is not a huge sprawling metropolis, which makes finding your way around simple and convenient. Everything is pretty much within walking distance. And this is particularly true of Copenhagen's gay scene. Centred in the 'Soho' like area of the old town, the city's gay scene seems almost geographically designed to provide virtually the entire evening's spectrum of entertainment and fun within one square kilometer.
Bornholm, Denmark - June 19, 2011
Bornholm is known throughout Europe for its outstanding efforts at historic preservation. Spend a day on a hunt for Bornholm’s historic past.
You can trace its history back to the Stone Age through prehistoric dolmens, or stone arches, that still stand on the island. Naturally, the Vikings left their mark here too, in the form of runic stones and other artifacts found in Almindingen forest.
Perhaps the island's most famous historic structure is the medieval castle of Hammershus, northern Europe's largest castle ruin.
Visby (Gotland), Sweden - June 20, 2011
The island's capital, Visby (pop. 20,000), the "city of roses and ruins" on the northwest coast of Gotland, is the seat of the governor of Gotland county and the see of a bishop. Within its enclosing walls it has preserved much of its medieval atmosphere and received the designation of UNESCO World Heritage Site. Of its original 17 churches, only 10 survive as ruins and only one (St Mary's) is still used for worship.
Kuressaare (Saaremaa), Estonia - June 21, 2011
Saaremaa, the biggest island of Estonia is known for its unique nature and a multiple of sights. Saaremaa has retained its uniqueness due to its location and insulation. In the villages there are still stone fences and houses with thatched roofs, beautiful national costumes and dialectal language are still used. Junipers, dolomite, windmills and the famous local home-brewed beer are considered the symbols of Saaremaa.
Tallinn, Estonia - June 22, 2011
In 2011 Tallinn will become the focus of Europe's culture scene when it takes on its role as a European Capital of Culture. As part an EU initiotive that started in 1985, two European cities are awarded the honour each year, during which they have the chance to showcase their cultural offerings to the rest of the world.
Tallinn is busily gearing up for the occasion, planning a huge array of special events and holding competitions for ideas, creative works and even ecological souvenirs.
The theme the city has chosen for its 2011 programme is "Stories of the Seashore". The idea is to re-open the city to the sea, and with the help of writers, musicians, actors, tell the stories of Tallinn's, and Estonia's, spiritual and cultural connection to the seashore.
St. Petersburg, Russia - June 23; 24; 25, 2011
The city of St. Petersburg is relatively young if judged by Russian or European standards. Founded in 1703, St. Petersburg just celebrated its 300th anniversary. But despite being a young city it has a rich and exciting history. From the early days of Peter the Great's "Paradise" and "Northern Venice" to the modern events of 1991 coup d'etat this city has been full of life. St. Petersburg has always been a city of myth and mystery: you can hardly find a young city which is wrapped in legends and stories in such a unique way.
Helsinki, Finland - June 26, 2011
Helsinki is unique among Northern European cities. The lifestyle in the second-most northern capital city in the world is full of contrasts and activities in the form of hundreds of events and friendly people. Helsinki’s identity has been formed by cultural influences from both the East and West.
The archipelago that surrounds Helsinki with hundreds of tiny islands creates an idyllic environment for cruises, for example.
Over 450 years of history, several architectural layers and the impact of different periods can be clearly seen in Helsinki. Finnish design has also made the country's capital city world famous. The beauty of the surrounding nature blends seamlessly together with high-tech achievements, while old traditions mix with the latest contemporary trends.
Mariehamn (Aland Islands), Finland - June 27, 2011
Mariehamn (Finnish Maarianhamina; pop.25,000) is the larget settlement within the Aeland Islands. Situated on a promontory at the south end of the island, it is a very popular seaside resort. In the center of Mariehamn, in Norra Esplanadsgatan, stands the church of St Göran - completed in 1927 and noted for its stained glass.
Cruising Stockholm Archipelago, Sweden - June 28, 2011
Cruising between the small islands through the largest Archipelago in Sweden is an experience. One can enjoy a spectacular sunset from the deck that during summer months lasts until 10:30 - 11:00 o'clock at night.
Stockholm, Sweden (Debarkation) - June 29, 2011
Arrival time TBD, and guests must depart by 10 AM.
Stockholm is built across 14 islands and is often called the Venice of the North. With more foreign visitors than any other city in Scandinavia it is also considered to be the Capital of Scandinavia. Stockholm is situated at the point where the vast Lake Mälaren flows into the Baltic Sea and was built on this strategic spot in the mid 13th century, enabling the founder to tax merchant vessels going in and out of the lake. More importantly, Stockholm is one of the favorite cities in the world of Zoom Vacations Co-Owners, Bryan Herb and Joel Cabrera. And while in Stockholm, you must make a visit to the Ice Bar.
