Botswana Okavango Delta Gay Safari Tour Itinerary

Day 1 - Maun / Kwara Camp
Dumela rra (Hello) and welcome to Botswana!

For those arriving from Namibia we’ll be flying from Windhoek to Maun with a layover in Johannesburg.

Upon arrival at Maun International Airport, we’ll board a 30-minute charter flight to Kwara Camp, a luxury safari camp in the heart of the Okavango Delta.

The afternoon is ours to relax by the pool or depending on flight schedules there may be time for a later afternoon safari drive, followed by a Welcome Dinner.

Please note: The flight into Maun International Airport is not included in the cost of the tour. More details will be provided with the official trip confirmation email about 11 months prior to departure.

Accommodation: Kwara Camp, Okavango Delta

Day 2 - Kwara Camp
After an early morning wake-up call, we’ll gather around the fireplace for a freshly prepared breakfast.

At sunrise, it’s time to mount up for a game drive. An early morning departure increases the chance for unusual sightings as the majority of fauna are active at the beginning and end of the day when temperatures are lower. During the drive, we’re likely to see lions, hyenas, wildebeest, kudu, giraffes, zebras, gazelles, and many more amazing creatures.

Around noon, we’ll return to the camp for lunch and some leisure time.

In the afternoon we can take a double-decker boat cruise through the Delta, which provides a better vantage point to watch elephants bathe or hear the snort of a territorial hippo.

Our afternoon wouldn’t be complete without a scenic sunset stop for a classic safari tradition – sundowners! While we savour our cocktails, we’ll marvel at the natural beauty of the Okavango River Delta, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that stands as a testament to the delicate balance between the annual floodwaters and the thriving ecosystems they nourish.

Tonight, we’ll dine together at the camp.

Feeling extra adventurous? We can go for a night game drive and have the chance to see rare, nocturnal animals on the prowl.

Day 3 - Kwara Camp
Morning comes early once again, and after a freshly prepared breakfast, we’ll indulge in a mokoro safari and glide through the unique waterways and floodplains in a traditional African canoe. The complete stillness of an early morning in the Delta is a truly sublime experience.

We’ll enjoy another game drive and if there’s interest we can do a short guided nature walk to discover a world of smaller flora, insects, and tracks easily missed while in a vehicle.

For fishing enthusiasts, the camp will provide all the necessary fishing gear. The Okavango and Kwando Rivers are both renowned as excellent destinations for fly fishing and traditional spin fishing.

Tonight, we’ll reconvene to share stories from the day over a Farewell Dinner.

Rise and shine! Depending on flight times we’ll have the option for an early game drive.

Afterwards, we’ll board our 30-minute charter flight back to Maun International Airport. Safe travels home!

Please note: Do not book your international flights out of Maun until speaking with our representative. Our departure time will depend on the charter flights available from the camp. More details will be provided with the official trip confirmation email about 11 months prior to departure.

Trip Notes

A mosaic of cultures and wildlife welcomes gay travellers.
Known as "The Pearl of Africa", Botswana is emerging as a unique new destination for adventure travel. Filled with stunning natural beauty and multiple UNESCO World Heritage Sites, its wildlife conservation efforts are second-to-none. Even though homosexuality was only recently legalized (in 2019), the country’s cosmopolitan and tourist areas have always been welcoming to LGBTQ+ travellers.

Botswana Visa
Tourists visiting Botswana for fewer than 90 days per calendar year are not required to obtain a visa in advance of their arrival. Your passport must be valid for a minimum of 6 months after the date you enter Botswana. At least 3 completely blank pages in your passport are required for entry into Botswana.

Culture Shock
Typically, Botswanans greet one another leisurely with a “hello” and a “how are you doing?” While most Botswanans understand English, a greeting given in a local language will be received with delight. Handshaking is common. Public displays of affection (LGBTQ+ or otherwise) are discouraged.

Local LGBT Scene
While there is no LGBTQ+ scene in Botswana, the vast majority of Botswanans are friendly to visitors regardless of gender and sexual orientation.

Weather
The best time to visit is typically during the long dry season from June to October. In June, you can expect clear skies, plenty of sunshine and little to no rain. Despite it being the first month of winter, daytime temperatures hover around 68-75F (20-24C). Temperatures at night may dip below 50F (10C) especially in desert areas.

Required Vaccinations
Based on the entry requirements for Botswana, there are no mandatory vaccinations. To determine if you should take preventative measures to reduce the risk of illness, consult with your doctor or a travel medical clinic. We cannot provide vaccination recommendations.

Electricity
You will need an international travel plug/adapter for Type D, G, & M sockets.

Connectivity
WiFi will be available at the camp, but at slower speeds than what you are used to at home. You’ll be able to check e-mails and social media, but likely unable to stream video.

Money
The local currency is the Botswana Pula (BWP). Kwara Camp is all-inclusive, however should you wish to purchase anything from the gift shop, Visa and Mastercard are accepted.
We recommend carrying approximately $200 USD to be used in case of an emergency, or if your credit/ATM cards are placed on hold. This should be in addition to any spending money.

Tipping
Gratuities for the safari guides, trackers and camp staff are all included.

Luggage & Charter Flight Restrictions
Flying in Northern Botswana is a lot different than your average regional airline flight. We fly to remote, inaccessible airstrips, which rarely exceed 1 km in length. This is why it is of utmost importance that weight in the aircraft is within its limits.

IMPORTANT Weight restrictions
For weight limitations and therefore safety reasons, we need to know in advance if passenger is over 100kgs (220lbs) as flight surcharges shall apply.

IMPORTANT Luggage restrictions:
Moremi Air has a strict luggage weight policy of 15kg/33lbs for hold luggage and 5kg/11lbs for carry on. The baggage compartment on our aircraft has a door opening which is 1,0’’ (25cm) x2’7" (62cm). The maximum size of bags is 24”/62cm long and 11”/30cm wide and 9”/25cm high.

Moremi Air cannot accept suitcases with hard frames, as they need to be able to squash the bags into the pod if necessary. A duffle-style bag with a hard bottom and wheels is fine as long as it fits within the dimensions. No hard Samsonite-type suitcases or luggage with rigid sides or wheels can be accommodated.

We do understand that many guests are traveling for extended periods and may therefore have additional baggage, Excess luggage can be stored in Maun for collection on the guest’s return to Maun.

Starting/Finishing Point Hotel
Kwara Camp, Okavango Delta
Kwara Camp is located in the remote northern part of the Okavango Delta within the private Kwara Concession. Offering only eight traditionally-styled safari tents, Kwara is an exclusive and intimate camp offering access to both the permanent waterways of the Delta and open grasslands teeming with wildlife.

Guests at Kwara can enjoy a diverse range of wildlife experiences all year round; glide silently through crystal-clear waterways in a mokoro (dug-out canoe), enjoy sunset powerboat rides, go bird watching, take a walk on one of the many palm-fringed islands (seasonal), or head out on an exciting day or night game drive.
