Ayubovan and welcome to Sri Lanka!

Upon arrival at Colombo Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB), you’ll be escorted through immigration before a private transfer to the hotel.

The evening begins with a Group Meeting at 6:00 PM, followed by an included Welcome Dinner.

Mirisaweti Stupa, Anuradhapura

Day 2 - Puttalam / Anuradhapura / Dambulla
Subha udaesanak (good morning)!

After fueling up on breakfast, we’ll set out on a 3-hour drive for a village near Puttalam to meet the "Ceylon Africans", a small community descended from Mozambican and Tanzanian ancestors. Here, we’ll enjoy a conversation with local families along with a traditional song and dance performance.

Later, we’ll continue to Anuradhapura for lunch at The Sanctuary at Tissawewa, then spend the afternoon exploring this ancient city, including the 2nd-century BC Brazen Palace, the 4th-century Samadhi Buddha statue, and the Isurumuniya Rock Temple with its carved "Lovers" relief and Kuttam Pokuna bathing ponds.

We’ll close the day at the Ruwanweliseya Stupa and the sacred Sri Maha Bodhiya, grown from the original tree under which the Buddha is said to have attained enlightenment. It’s also recognized as the oldest documented tree in the world.

Our day ends in the early evening in Dambulla.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Hotel: Heritance Kandalama Hotel, Dambulla, 5*

Polonnaruwa Sri Lanka gay tour

Day 3 - Dambulla / Habarana / Polonnaruwa
Rise and shine!

Our morning begins with a visit to a rural school, where we’ll get the chance to sing a few songs with the kids and soak in a genuine slice of community life.

From there, we’ll drive to Polonnaruwa, Sri Lanka’s medieval capital and once the seat of King Vijayabahu. We’ll visit the King’s Palace and its royal baths, the Tooth Relic Temple, the striking Image House, and the historic Vatadage, wrapping up at Gal Vihara Temple, home to a series of breathtaking Buddha statues carved directly into rock (bicycles are available for those who’d like to explore the sites on two wheels).

This afternoon continues on a kayaking excursion in Kala Wewa. Built in 460 A.D. by King Dhatusena, this twin reservoir system in the heart of the ancient Anuradhapura region offers calm, flat waters that are welcoming to paddlers of every skill level, and if we’re lucky, we might spot wild elephants cooling off along the banks.

Those who’d rather skip the paddling can instead head off on an afternoon game drive through Minneriya, Kaudulla, or Hurulu National Park, depending on where the day’s elephant sightings are best.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Hotel: Heritance Kandalama Hotel, Dambulla, 5*

Sigiriya, Sri Lanka gay tour

Day 4 - Sigiriya
Today’s a big day with an early start!

We’re off to conquer Sigiriya Rock Fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage Site built by King Kashyapa between 477 and 495. Known as "Lion Rock", this citadel rises 656 ft. (200 m) from the surrounding jungle and once served as the innermost stronghold of a fortified town. Along the climb, we’ll seek out the Heavenly Maidens frescoes, tucked into a sheltered pocket of the rock and reached by a spiral stairway.>/

Once we’ve made our way back down, we’ll return to the hotel to freshen up, then head to a nearby Buddhist monastery to take part in a traditional almsgiving ceremony.

Later, we’ll enjoy lunch and a leisurely afternoon before reconvening in the evening for a local ‘paduru party’ arranged just for our group. ‘Paduru’ means straw mats in Sinhalese, and these village-style celebrations bring together local cuisine, live music, and seating on straw mats for a true taste of Sri Lankan tradition, rounded out with the chance to sample arrack, the country’s popular coconut-based spirit.

Note on Sigiriya Rock: reaching the top means nearly 1,200 stone steps up and back down, taking roughly 2-3 hours round trip, depending on your pace. Anybody in reasonably good condition should be able to make the climb, and it’s certainly worth the effort.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Hotel: Heritance Kandalama Hotel, Dambulla, 5*

Dambulla Cave Temple

Day 5 - Matale / Kandy
Today begins with a visit to the Dambulla Cave Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its richly painted cave interiors. It was here that King Valagamba took refuge from invasion in the 1st century BC before turning the caves into a rock temple, home to frescoes over 2,000 years old.

From there, we’ll continue on to Matale to visit a private spice garden, gaining insight into how these spices are grown, processed, and used in both cooking and traditional medicine.

Later, we’ll arrive in Kandy and set out on a guided stroll through the city’s historic heart.

As evening pooja begins, we’ll visit the sacred Temple of the Tooth Relic, known as the Dalada Maligawa, for a private viewing. Built in the 16th century, the temple houses the Buddha’s Tooth Relic, brought to Sri Lanka during the reign of King Meghavarna and encased within 7 nested caskets beneath a golden canopy.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Hotel: Kandy Myst by Cinnamon Hotel, Kandy, 5*

Kandy, Sri Lanka gay tour

Day 6 - Kandy
Today is dedicated to exploring Kandy, the last bastion of Buddhist political power and one of Sri Lanka’s great highland capitals.

Our first stop is a visit with Chandani, a local artist whose home is tucked behind a working tea plantation. She’ll walk us through the world of batik and handicraft traditions, along with the ways artisans like her are working to keep them alive.

From there, we’ll drive into the hills for a hands-on cooking experience in a mud hut kitchen. We’ll prepare a spread of mouthwatering Sri Lankan dishes, which we’ll of course get to taste once the class wraps up.

Later, we’ll drive to Pilimathalawa to meet a guru of the ancient Kandyan art of dance and drumming, which includes the cobra dance, the mask dance, and the striking Ginisila, a display of power over fire with a mesmerizing fire-walking finale.

The rest of the afternoon is free to indulge our whims.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Hotel: Kandy Myst by Cinnamon Hotel, Kandy, 5*

Sri Lanka scenic railway

Day 7 - Peradeniya / Nuwara Eliya
After breakfast, we’ll head to Peradeniya to tour the Royal Botanic Gardens, the largest in Sri Lanka and one of the finest in Asia. Long before it became a botanical garden, this was a pleasure garden for the kings of Kandy.

From there, we’ll make our way to the charming Peradeniya Railway Station and board a local train for a scenic 4-hour ride to the tea country town of Nuwara Eliya. Often called one of the most picturesque rail routes in the world, the journey winds upward into the heart of Ceylon Tea country, where rolling hills give way to velvety plantations, rushing streams, and cascading waterfalls.

Once we arrive, we’ll join our guide for a short tour of Nuwara Eliya, known as Sri Lanka’s "Little England" for its lingering traces of British colonial influence.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Boxed Lunch & Dinner
Hotel: Heritance Tea Factory Hotel, Nuwara Eliya, 5*

Sri Lanka gay tour - Horton Plains

Day 8 - Nuwara Eliya
We’ll rise very early with a packed breakfast in hand for a drive to Horton Plains, timed to arrive as the park opens so we have the best chance of views at World’s End before the mist rolls in.

Set in Sri Lanka’s central highlands above 7,000 ft (2133 m), Horton Plains is a mystical stretch of montane grasslands, dense forest, and delicate waterfalls home to 12 endemic bird species with, the Wood Pigeon among the most coveted sightings.

We’ll spend the morning exploring on foot, with the option to tackle the full Horton Plains Loop, a roughly 5.6-mile (9 km) trek that takes about 3 to 4 hours. Keep an eye out for herds of Sri Lankan sambar deer along the way.<.

< For anyone who’d prefer a shorter outing, the group will split: one group will complete the full loop, and the other will enjoy a lighter 2-hour hike.

< Afterward, we’ll return to the hotel with the rest of the day free to relax.

Meals Included: Box Breakfast & Dinner
Hotel: Heritance Tea Factory Hotel, Nuwara Eliya, 5*

Ceylon tea

Day 9 - Ella / Galle
Today begins with a visit to a working tea factory to dig into the history of Ceylon Tea and learn the methodology of how leaves are plucked and processed.

Tea first arrived in Sri Lanka in the mid-19th century, and we’ll trace the journey from raw green leaf to the familiar dark brew, through drying, cutting, rolling, and fermentation, a process that’s helped make this island one of the world’s largest tea exporters.

Later, we’ll continue on, stopping for lunch in Ella, a hillside town tucked into rugged, cascade-lined terrain and home to some of Sri Lanka’s most scenic views.

Afterward, we’ll drive for about 3.5 hours, arriving in Galle with the rest of the afternoon at our leisure.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Hotel: Jetwing Lighthouse Hotel, Galle, 5*

Galle Sri Lanka gay tour

Day 10 - Galle / Koggala
This morning, we’re off to Koggala to witness stilt fishing, a traditional method practiced by fishermen who perch on narrow poles anchored to the seabed to cast their lines. We’ll gain insight into their way of life, and they may even invite us to climb onto the stilts and try it ourselves.

From there, we’ll visit a cinnamon plantation to uncover the story of Ceylon Cinnamon, considered the finest in the world and responsible for over 70% of global cinnamon production.

Later, we’ll return to the hotel for some free time before our private tour of Galle Fort. This UNESCO World Heritage Site was originally built by the Portuguese and later expanded by the Dutch into the fort we see today.

As our walk wraps up, we’ll head to the Galle Fort Hotel for an arrack tasting masterclass, known locally as the Rope Walk. We’ll work our way through 5 specialty arracks, each paired with carefully chosen “bites.”

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Hotel: Jetwing Lighthouse Hotel, Galle, 5*

Colombo Sri Lanka gay tour

Day 11 - Bentota / Colombo
Our final full day begins at the Lunuganga Estate, a masterpiece of Sri Lankan architecture and the former country residence of the late Geoffrey Bawa, a gay architect widely regarded as the father of Asian architecture. Bawa purchased this former 25-acre rubber estate in 1948 and spent decades transforming it into a garden paradise through careful, creative design.

Today, the property reflects his legacy through its astonishing views, elegant interiors, and original artwork and blueprints displayed throughout.

From there, we’ll continue to Colombo to visit the Barefoot Gallery and enjoy an al-fresco lunch. The gallery was founded by Barbara Sansoni, a painter, designer, and weaver whose passion for color helped shape the arts and textile scene in Sri Lanka.

Afterward, we’ll check into our hotel for some leisure time before setting out in the late afternoon on a private heritage tour. Beginning at the Old Dutch Hospital, we’ll wander through the lively streets of Pettah, browsing stalls selling everything from textiles to spices, before arriving at the Old Dutch Museum, where we’ll break off and head to a nearby restaurant for a special almost-Farewell Dinner.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Hotel: Shangri La Colombo Hotel, Colombo, 5*

Gay Colombo tour

Day 12 - Colombo / Departure
Most flights depart in the evening, so we’ll have an unconventional last day with a morning tour of the house that once belonged to Geoffrey Bawa, the inventor of Tropical Modernism.

From there, we’ll visit the Saskia Fernando Gallery, one of Sri Lanka’s leading contemporary art spaces, celebrated for showcasing bold work from both established and emerging local artists.

We’ll toast to the memories we’ve made over a Farewell Lunch at one of Colombo’s most famous dining spaces, tucked behind quiet courtyards and tropical gardens.

Later, we’ll return to our hotel for some free time before a complimentary late checkout and transfer to the airport. Safe travels home, and thanks for joining us in Sri Lanka!

Trip Notes

Sri Lanka Visa
Citizens from the U.S., Canada, the U.K., Australia, and other countries are eligible to obtain a free Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) for stays up to 30 days. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your stay.

Culture Shock
Sri Lankan culture is deeply rooted in tradition, hospitality, and a strong sense of pride in national identity. Visitors are often struck by the warmth with which they’re welcomed, an ethos captured in the timeless saying "Ayubowan", meaning "may you live long". Sharing a meal together is central to social life here, often enjoyed by hand and brimming with rice, curries, and spices, turning even the simplest gathering into a warm and memorable celebration. Regarding travel throughout the country, roads and traffic can be chaotic, with tuk-tuks, buses, motorcycles, pedestrians, animals, and other vehicles often sharing busy roads. Outside the major cities, roads can be narrow, winding, and uneven, so journeys may take considerably longer than the distances on a map suggest. Public markets, streets, and religious sites can also be crowded, noisy, and highly stimulating.

Sigiriya gay tour

Local LGBT Scene
Found primarily in Colombo, where a small but determined community has created pockets of belonging through advocacy, art, and shared experience. While broader acceptance remains a gradual process and public displays of affection can invite scrutiny, local initiatives and cultural spaces continue to build bridges and encourage understanding.

Weather
February and March typically bring warm, sunny weather to Sri Lanka, making them among the best months for both cultural exploration and outdoor adventure. We can expect daytime temperatures ranging from 84°F to 90°F (29°C to 32°C) in lowland areas like Colombo and Galle. In the hill country regions such as Kandy or Nuwara Eliya, temperatures are noticeably cooler, hovering around 64°F to 75°F (18°C to 24°C), providing a refreshing contrast and comfortable conditions for hiking and sightseeing among the tea plantations.

Unfortunately, we are not able to accommodate individuals with limited mobility unless they are willing to absorb the cost of a private guide/assistant which varies by country and is only possible on a case by case basis. It is also your responsibility to advise Out Adventures of any pre-existing medical conditions that may increase the risk of you requiring medical attention, or that may affect the normal conduct of the tour and the enjoyment of the tour by other participants.
