Mykonos Gay Bars | ||||||||
|
This is not Ibiza. There are no big gay venues and no all-night rave parties. Mykonos is a place for unwinding and relaxing. The queer scene is petite and stylish. The island has six bars and clubs for gay men. Lesbians are welcome, although Mykonos is not a huge dyke destination. These venues are concentrated in three locations near the old harbour front, where the small fishing boats are moored. Pierro's, Manto and Icaros are situated next to each other in a little lane off Taxi Square. During peak summer nights, hundreds of guys spill out into the street. All three bars are decorated in variations of post-modernist classicism, with reproductions of ancient Greek artefacts gracing the otherwise minimalist interiors. The upstairs dance bar at Pierro's features huge jigsaw shaped mirrors and polished driftwood, and a vast open balcony that overlooks the street below. Icaros - also upstairs – has a gorgeous roof terrace that is sheer perfection for a romantic tryst beneath the stars. Porta Bar is located all by itself in a tiny alley at the other end of the harbour front, near the blue-domed church. More like a traditional English gay pub, it is down-to-earth and cruisier than the other venues. Further along the harbour front, next to Paraportiani Church, is Kastro's. This is the place to sip cocktails and enjoy the sensational Mykonian sunsets. Down the same street, closer to Little Venice, is the Montparnasse Piano Bar, where the American diva Phyllis belts out show tunes. Before heading home from beach for your shower, make sure you stop at one of the bars in 'Little Venice' for a 'sun-downer' and watch the dramatic sunset reflected in the water. It's very romantic. Saunter back to your digs and pass out for a couple of hours. Nothing happens early in Mykonos, unless it's really early morning! Evening meals are taken between 9-11pm. You'll find a large number of ethnic restaurants serving amazing food. But there's plenty of fast food if you need a quick bite. Souvlaki, also called Gyros, is the Greek equivalent of a hamburger. After dinner head for Porta Bar where you'll find a crowded, fun gang with the scintillating Sophie behind the bar and the very French Gilles working the small outside seating area. If you're there to cruise then grab a 'Neckers Nook' where you can check out the scene or just abuse your man of the minute. The Porta Bar closes at 3am and is situated right behind the Nicos Taverna. Walk across the Port to the centre of the action at Pierros Bar and Pierros upstairs with 'Mr Pleasure Chest'. At the weekends, The Pierros Complex stays open until 7am, so don't peak too early! The world and his lover hover outside in the square, so check out the Manto Bar and visit 'H', the gorgeous Swedish skinhead with a PhD in sex. He'll fill you in on where to go, and what's on in town. Upstairs (watch out, the steps are really steep on the way down), is the Icarous Bar with a drag show every night at 2am and very friendly staff. If you want a stunning view of Mykonos then head for The Roof with its quasi darkroom and knockout view. Wander back to Little Venice and catch the Piano Bar's show, with Phyllis belting out show tunes from 10pm-3am. There's great cruising after 3am around the Church next to the Castro Bar. It looks scary, but get over it. Swallow your pride, and dive into action on the rocks. The action goes on until the sun comes up. The straight clubs all want to cash in on the Pink Pound, so ask around for one-night stands. The Hush Club threatens to do a 'Gay Gods' Party, but there's no information at the time of writing. Mykonos is extremely gay friendly. You can walk around hand in hand with your partner, or the 'Mr Right' you've just found. No-one will bat an eyelash.
