Delos Island: the famous ancient holy sanctuary:
a major Greek archaeological site and UNESCO world heritage
Half day boat trip & guided tour bookings. Site is closed on Mondays. Departure from town (Hora) Old Port, behind Townhall.
The Delos archaeological sanctuary, birthplace of Apollo and Artemis, is listed by Unesco as one of mankind's most important cultural and historical sites. Delos was the sacred island for Ancient Greeks and became the holiest place in the Aegean with a flourishing commercial town & harbour, large population, temples, and open air theatre....
Delos is now uninhabited and off-limits for an overnight stay.. Delos was mostly the spiritual focus of the Ancient Greeks ethnic identity: it was a holy island, dedicated to the god Apollo and the religious festivals grew in the ancient world into a huge trade fair and city without defensive walls with public buildings, a cosmopolitan banking and trading center, with it's grain port and slave market. Today Delos constitutes the most well preserved ancient city in Greece.
The short boat trip and guided tour gives insight and facts on the remarkable Hellenistic ruins dating from 300 B.C. with Greek & Roman relics. The enormous spread of ancient ruins show you temples, courtyards, houses, baths and shrines with the most eye-catching Avenue of the Lions (the originals from Naxos marble. You will discover Cleopatra's house, the Temples of Isis, Athena and Apollo, the Altar of Dionysos with its huge broken phallic symbol, and the House of the Dolphins, House of the Masks and House of Dionysos with contain marvellous mosaic floor. The theatre could seat 3,000 to 5,000 spectators, and the small but attractive Museum has sculptures of the Archaic, Classical, Hellenistic and Roman periods, together with a collection of vases from various periods.
To escape the crowds at the end of the guided tour you have time to climb to Mount Kynthos, from where you will discover panoramic views to the many islands that create the circle of islands surrounding Delos, giving its name to the Cyclades.
